Overview

Our Public Health Unit works with internal and external stakeholders including:

  • Population Health Division of Queensland Health
  • other health services including Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services
  • federal and local government departments
  • non-government agencies
  • research institutions and local communities.

Services

We provide public health services and support across Far North Queensland to the Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service and the Torres Cape Hospital and Health Service. This includes the following:

We give advice on immunisation to vaccine service providers and manage immunisation programs.

Environmental health involves monitoring and enforcing public health legislation and responding to environmental health issues.

We respond to outbreaks of mosquito borne diseases in Far North Queensland. We also conduct surveillance and control of Aedes albopictus mosquitoes in the Torres Strait.

This service provides support and advice for clinicians for the diagnosis and management of syphilis cases.

Our action and response plans are to help prevent and control sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and blood borne viruses (BBVs).

Surveillance of communicable diseases and tracking of outbreaks as well as the provision of data and statistics on various aspects of public health.

Our diversity profiles include:

  • estimated resident populations
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations
  • socioeconomic status
  • country of birth
  • language spoken at home
  • proficiency in spoken English
  • ancestry and religious relationships.
