Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service offers Resident Medical Officers (Junior Doctors, post graduate years 2+) the opportunity to experience diverse clinical presentations unique to Tropical North Queensland.

You will have exposure to a vast array of clinical presentations including crocodile attacks, tropical infectious diseases, and chronic conditions, as well as the opportunity to work with senior medical specialists to diagnose, treat and prevent chronic and life-threatening diseases and injuries.

Employment conditions

As a Junior Doctor, you will be an essential component of the medical team, with our senior medical specialists ensuring you are supported through an experience that is globally unique. This can range from rotations within Cairns Hospital to supporting the medical team on outreach clinics or secondments to our rural and remote hospitals.

You will be paid as per Medical Officers (Queensland Health) Award – State 2015 in conjunction with Medical Officer (Queensland Health) Certified Agreement (No.6) 2022 (MOCA 6).

You will initially be recruited for a 12-month contract, with the potential of extension for those who wish to stay on.

Registration requirements

If you’re an international applicant, you’ll need to apply for registration with the Medical Board of Australia (MBA) once you have been offered a position. You can do this through the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

You’ll also need to provide a comparability assessment from a specialist medical college if you’re employed as any of the following:

  • staff specialist
  • specialist general practitioner
  • recognised advanced practitioner.
